By Mia Sidiro
As its popularity soars, online dating provides users a great way to meet people. There are an infinite number of sincere people truly interested in finding love and meaningful relationships that have turned to the internet for fulfilling this need. Do not be misled by the old stereotypical proverbial “pervert” or “geek” that hides to find his prey. Certainly, there a quite a few of those out there too, but overall, there are genuine people out there just like yourself.
The truth is that all kinds of people frequent the workplace, the gym, the clubs and even religious congregations and now the internet. Online dating attracts all types and all ages in pursuit of love and happiness including professionals, entrepreneurs and all other walks of life, just like you. The chances of finding love online are much greater than any other “network” available. It has worked for thousands of people and if it worked for them, it can work for you too! If you’re new to this modern age dating, or online dating, you simply need to follow some basic rules to protect yourself from some scoundrels that lurk in the information highway.
If you have unsuccessfully explored other avenues to find love or simply want to increase your odds of doing so, take the plunge. Here are a few tips specifically for those that are new to internet dating.
The first step is doing some research. You can do it yourself, or you can take the advice offered by some dating review sites. The latter will save you time as there are thousands of dating sites out there. Some are free; others charge a monthly fee, with the price dropping as you increase the length of your membership. Usually, registration is free and allows minimal activity, but a fee is charged after the trial period expires (if applicable) or to communicate with other members.
Once your decision is made as to which site suits you best, you must register. This is fairly easy. Some sites are painless, while others demand a great deal of detail. The choice is really up to you and depends on how you feel about disclosing some personal information.
Now you need to make a profile. It should be honest, with current photos of yourself (not of some supermodel). You should list a couple of hobbies or interests, and the type of relationship you are searching. Do not divulge any personal information in your profile or elsewhere! Now you’re ready to go.
A few precautions: don’t give out any banking information; don’t give out your phone number or address; never divulge credit card information; never send any money to anyone for any type of sob story they may have; and always chat and contact members within the dating site. Beware of scammers and their schemes which do not necessarily unfold within days; they may carry on a scam for months as they build a “trusting” relationship with you.
With these basic tips you can rest assured that your new online dating experience will be a more pleasant and safe one.
